Pressing

Pressing belongs in the category of forming (bending/shearing/drawing) when the tool (bender) deforms or shears out metal plate into a desired shape. Then tools are used to create other shapes, holes and trims in metal plate. During the operation, metal plate is situated between the die and the matrix. The die moves downwards until it recesses into the matrix. This process can be phased in 4 steps. First of all, metal plate bends after the contact with the die. Then it is sheared when the internal stress in material is so high that the material breaks along the shear line. The so-called cutting is then pressed through under the metal plate. When the die returns, it may intend to take also the metal plate itself with it. For these cases there is a mechanical retainer which puts the plate back to place.
